Casual Dining London
If we simply wanted to round up the best restaurants in London…
…well we'd have just created a big ol' list like everyone else's.
But what we thought might be much more useful would be for us to list out our #1 favourite restaurant in each London neighbourhood, so that you know where to go irrespective of where you find yourself in London. Now naturally listing just one restaurant per neighbourhood means that we've had to leave out large numbers of amazing London restaurants… and that hurts. So in some instances – mainly just to soften the blow in the event of our #1 choice being full – we've listed one or two alternative options for you to consider.
We've also dropped in the odd suggestion for amazing cocktail bars near our chosen restaurants, to help you choose a location for pre- and / or post-dinner drinks.
Enjoy!

CENTRAL
Soho | The Palomar
In an intensely competitive restaurant neighbourhood, The Palomar strikes the balance of ambience, food, and service just right. Push open the front door and you'll be enveloped in a steamy, zaatar-scented, shalom-giving haze, emanating from the sweeping steel dining bar and open kitchen. Take a stool and watch the theatrics, or retreat to the dining room at the back for an intimate Middle Eastern supper… READ MORE

ALSO AMAZING IN SOHO – Barrafina, which relocated from its original Frith St home to the ground floor of Quo Vadis, bringing its characteristic marble dining counter, bustling open kitchen and strangely Bavarian looking beer pumps along with it, and Xu, where you can enjoy pan-fried Taiwanese dumplings in style. Find our favourite Soho restaurants here.

Marylebone | Jikoni
Jikoni is owned & run by Gordon Ramsay protégé Ravinder Bhogal, and it's the jewel in her glittering culinary crown. She's given it a light, colourful, and immensely charming living room-like interior, making it the kind of place that feels cosy just to look at, let alone while away the hours in. The unique menu draws ideas from Britain, East Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, then puts them into an almost literal metaphorical melting pot, and the results – including her justifiably famous collection of exotic Scotch eggs – are absolutely fantastic. Fitzrovia | Akoko
This West African fine dining spot opened its doors in between lockdowns last year, and to let it slip under the radar would be a crime. Masterchef: The Professionals finalist William JM Chilila is in the kitchen creating a mouthwatering menu of dishes cooked according to the time-honoured techniques of fermenting, curing and smoking – the last of which is done with help from a Big Green Egg BBQ. Settle in for dishes like octopus with ofe nsala (spiced catfish) velouté paired with wines picked by Sager + Wilde's Honey Spencer, and bask in the warm glow of terracotta walls. READ MORE
Details: 21 Berners Street, Fitzrovia, W1T 3LP
Our favourite bar nearby: Murder Inc
ALSO AMAZING IN FITZROVIA – Portland! an unfussy, independent, relatively small Modern European restaurant which not only specialises in serving high-quality produce and wild game, but which also specialises in serving pie (and when they combine the two in their truffled wild game pithivier, well, that's reason enough to visit alone) Also, Clipstone! A sister restaurant to Portland (also on this list) Clipstone's interior is a virtual blank canvas, with white tile walls swaddling the simple wooden floor & furnishings – presumably so as not to distract diners from what's coming out of the open kitchen (which is a little more complicated…)
–
Bloomsbury | Noble Rot
From a wine-obsessed pair who also founded a wine magazine (named Noble Rot), this wine bar – aside from serving some of the nicest bottles of grape hooch in the land – is also a restaurant. Book a table in there and you'll enjoy dishes like raw Hereford beef with pickled walnuts and dripping croutons; smoked eel gazpacho and lovage; cherry and pistachio mille-feuille and an ever-changing French cheese plate: all assembled by a Michelin-star experienced chef, and expertly paired with different wine recommendations each day. Holborn | The Holborn Dining Room
Whenever you're next wandering around the Holborn area and, peckishly, decide that you'd like to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner inside the expansive ex-banking hall of a Grade II Listed Edwardian building; the interiors of which bear more than a passing resemblance to Balthazar, but which is set apart thanks to a menu full of classic British dishes including fish and chips with mushy peas and its dedicated pie room… go here. Covent Garden | Parsons
It's not easy for a restaurant in one of the busiest parts of London to feel 'neighbourhood-y'. But Parsons – a sibling of nearby wine-drenched eatery The 10 Cases – has local charm in buckets. It also has fresh seafood in buckets – the fresh catch of the day informing the daily specials, whilst starters and sides are anchored with the likes of sea trout tartare with Bloody Mary jelly, and Inverawe smoked salmon served on Guinness bread. It's tiny, and it's the most romantic fishmongers-turned restaurant you've ever been to. READ MORE
Details: 39 Endell Street, WC2H 9BA
Our favourite bar nearby: The American Bar at The Savoy
ALSO AMAZING IN COVENT GARDEN – Tucked away in gorgeous, colourful Covent Garden nook Neal's Yard, The Barbary features a weathered zinc bar that wraps around an open kitchen from which Barbary-inspired (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya) goodness like grilled duck hearts, huge Galician sirloin steaks and octopus mashawsha are served up. Also of note is the amazing Frenchie, a sleek Covent Garden eatery from the chef behind the insanely popular Paris restaurant of the same name. See the Best Restaurants in Covent Garden here.

Mayfair | Davies & Brook
This elegant, subdued dining room is the younger sister to the critically lavished Eleven Madison Park in New York. Head Chef Daniel Humm and a handful of his most accomplished team members have taken over the restaurant space in Claridges and have been delighting people with their intricately crafted tasting menus ever since, including the Michelin man. ALSO AMAZING IN MAYFAIR – Michelin-starred Gymkhana is one of the best Indian restaurants in Mayfair – and, in fact, the capital. Decked out in glossy wood and moody hues, it's a suitably sumptuous spot for feasting on wild muntjac biryani and elegant conical Chettinad dosas.
EAST
Dalston | Little Duck | The Picklery
This smashing little spot on Dalston Lane is a pickler's paradise. Stroll inside and you'll feel like you've wandered straight into the kitchen – the team will be busy fermenting and brining all kinds of goodness at the central counter, pausing only to rustle up dishes from the weekly-changing menu like clams with pancetta and peas; braised lamb with orzo and garlic yoghurt; and poached apricots with pine nut ice cream. Plus, there's a hand-picked list of natural wines to go with it all. Naturally. READ MORE

Shoreditch | Rochelle Canteen
Rochelle Canteen is one of those places that's difficult to get into. Not because of a starry A-list clientele, or a booking system that fills up months in advance… but because it's housed in an old school bike shed, tucked away behind a door in a garden wall. The Modern British food befits the garden setting, with dishes like grilled pork with dandelion, nettle arancini and apricot sorbet with vodka featuring on a regularly changing menu from culinary legends Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson. Hoxton | Morito
Remember when no-one cared about nostalgia? Those were the days. Like back in 1997, when Moro first opened and everything was all-new: like their fresh style of North African & Spanish Moorish tapas, or their then-innovative, stripped-back space with countertop dining and a wood-fired grill.
Well two decades later they opened a new place, Morito on Hackney Road.
And it's amazing. READ MORE

Clerkenwell | St John
St. John is probably the best value Michelin Star in the city. Reasonably priced, and changing daily, the menu is famed for its nose-to-tail philosophy, but in addition to alternative cuts of meat, you'll find the likes of cured seatrout served with cucumber and dill; langoustines; poached rabbit; and freshly-baked madeleines (which can be ordered by the dozen). Farringdon | Quality Chop House
Behold a place that totally lives up to its name.
A 19th-century working man's eating house – revamped as a Modern British dining room and wine bar – The Quality Chop House has been feeding the residents of Farringdon, and those from a little further afield, since 1896. And it was all getting a little 'meh', until 2012 when the grade-II listed dining room was taken over by new owners, who overhauled the menu, the service… and added cushions to the wooden benches.
Which was nice. READ MORE

Tower Bridge | Legare
A tiny little pastel-hued enclave tucked at the bottom of a Victorian spice warehouse. Bethnal Green | Campania
It's a beautifully rustic Italian joint, housed in an old dairy off Columbia Road. At its centre sits a sweet cobbled courtyard covered in flowers (undoubtedly the best seats in the house). The daily changing menu is mostly filled with Italian soul food – everything from big bowls of fresh, hand-rolled pasta; to slabs of Italian meat loaf, smothered in a rich tomato sauce. And then there's the wine – European-leaning, with plenty offered by the glass – as well as a selection of post-dinner Italian digestifs. READ MORE

Hackney Wick | Cornerstone
The debut restaurant from Tom Brown, Michelin-starred Cornerstone (which, as soon as it opened, immediately looked like the foundation of something big) has a distinct industrial / minimalist feel. At its heart is a small open kitchen from which the chefs cook up a seafood-driven menu, which rotates according to whatever Poseidon allows the day boats to snap up. READ MORE

Haggerston | Berber & Q
Perched inside an old railway cavern in Haggerston, this exposed-brick, industrially-styled space sees some pretty unusual fusion cuisine plated up on its wooden tables: Middle Eastern and North African recipes, cooked using American BBQ techniques. Which, if you're wondering, takes the form of dishes like smoked pork belly with pomegranate molasses BBQ sauce, harissa hot wings, and dirty-fried mejadrah (a type of sweet rice) with sumac onions and barberries. You won't find better Middle Eastern BBQ in town, trust us. READ MORE

Stoke Newington | Perilla
Perilla is an "anti-fine dining fine dining restaurant". And as it turns out, hypocrisy tastes delicious. More specifically, it tastes like seaweed bread brushed with roasted lamb fat, roast kale with cod roe, and cuttlefish bolognese; complimented by a concise yet worldly wine list, simple, flower-laden tables, and a strongly botanical cocktail menu. Spitalfields | Bubala
After years of sold-out supperclubs and pop-ups, the dream team behind Bubala – Berber & Q's Marc Summers and former Palomar chef Helen Graham – finally went permanent. Their debut eatery, named after the Yiddish word for 'darling', scores 10 on every front – rustic, welcoming atmosphere; thirst-quenching wines and cocktails; and an absolutely knock-out menu of Middle Eastern vegetarian dishes. London Bridge | Padella
Perched on the edge of Borough Market, Padella serves only fresh, hand-made pasta – which you can see being made from the window, all day. It comes in a short-but-sweet list of just ten dishes, almost all of which costs less than a tenner. You'll find pappardelle with 8-hour beef shin ragu, tagliarini with Dorset crab, and duck mezzaluna with sage butter, all served up over two floors of slick monochrome dining. READ MORE

It's a charming, Parisian-inspired wine bar and restaurant, courtesy of the same team behind Shoreditch's beloved Brawn. Stop by for a long, lazy lunch or a romantic dinner and you'll get to feast on some of the most delicious Modern European fare – plates of cheese and charcuteries, followed by the likes of bison tartare or summer vegetable and chorizo tostada – flushed down by an excitingly eclectic mix of mostly natural, organic wines, produced by small-scale winemakers. Pimlico | La Poule Au Pot
This little French restaurant makes the word 'quaint' seem like a quaint understatement. It's cosy, wood-filled, romantic, wicker-laden, and a tiny bit elegant to boot. Richmond | Petersham Nurseries
The Petersham Nurseries Café – which isn't a café at all, but a restaurant – is one that used to have a Michelin Star. They famously hated it, because of the heightened expectations that diners now had, hoping for fine dining in what is, essentially, a greenhouse. Which ironically is precisely what makes it so good; you're eating food a few yards away from where it was grown. As long as you go into it expecting something simple, rustic, and homely, you'll love it. READ MORE
